Founder of the Regenboog Apotheken pharmacy chain (Netherlands)
Paul Christiaan Harder (born in 1958) is a Dutch pharmacist who has been working in this capacity since 1985. Paul was educated at Catholic boys’ schools in The Hague, and went on to study Pharmacy in Leiden after completing high school. As a pharmacist, he established a chain of pharmacies throughout the country: the Regenboog Apotheken. In addition to being neighbourhood pharmacies, these also play a specific role for certain niches. For example, some branches specialise in ADHD medication, while others specialise in supplying medications to ships and the global offshore industry. The Regenboog Apotheek in Bavel is the centre for pharmacy-prepared medications.
This pharmacy prepares customised medication and delivers it to patients around the world. The pharmacy’s expertise in this area means that it is often called upon by the addiction healthcare community to prepare tailored medicines or to curb medication shortages. This is done based on the belief that medication should be accessible and available to all patients. Despite opposition from health insurers, the pharmacy persists in providing care to those who need it, and regularly files lawsuits against health insurers and/or government bodies in order to get the cost of medication reimbursed.
Regenboog Apotheek Bavel prepares Tapering Strips and sends them to patients. This type of care, which helps patients to gradually taper off their medication use in a responsible manner, was developed by psychiatrists and scientists at Maastricht University and the University of Utrecht. More than 10,000 patients have since used the Tapering Strips to successfully taper off their medication use, and a number of scientific studies have been published on this method.
